The Wade Cup

Instructions
WHY WADE?

The Wade Cup was named after Jeptha Homer Wade II
Wade was an incorporator of the museum in 1913
He financed the procurement of this cup
Made many donations and served as the president of trustees from 1920 until his death 1926.
The cup was unsigned therefore named after him.
He was born in Cleveland in 1857. He was close to his grandfather J.H Wade I who was one of the founders of the western union telegraph company and wealthy industrialist.
His familys gifts of the land to the city included the land where the museum stands.
His interest in art came from his grandfather’s influence.

INTERIOR:

The edge of the interior consists of the repetition of the single word wal-barakah, “and blessing”
The word wal-daw(l)ah, “government” is mentioned once.
In the center of the basin is a design of 4 sphinxes by order of Badr Al-Din Lu’Lu of Mosul (1233-59)
Close parallels in Mesopotamian metalwork from Badr Al-Din Lu’lu’s court.
Good wishes in elaborate naskhi inscriptions below the rim
