The theme of they cant help it in films

In films of this era, there is a theme that emerges of “they can’t help it.” Like all of these monsters are sort of victims in some way. Yes, they do terrible things, but there is something else at work that compels them to act as they do. I think you see it most in the gangster films and the horror films of this era, but the argument could be made in Temple Drake as well. Pick a film from this week and explain how this manifests itself. Do you think it could be a reflection of some of the events occurring in society during this time?
