ORGANIZATION AND CONTENT: captivating introduction, compelling body, and contemplative conclusion, and it should INCLUDE the following content:
Information about and description of the commemorative cultural artifact: what events of the past does it commemorate? When was it established, constructed, erected, etc.? Who commissioned or sponsored its creation? If it’s a statue or other physical memorial, who is the artist(s)? describe its appearance, dimensions, surroundings, context, etc.
Analysis/Interpretation of the artifact: What do you think the artifact “says”? What message does it convey? How does it accomplish this? You should attach each claim you make to some physical component of the artifact or ritual observance.
General theory or theories about collective memory and objects/acts of commemoration: While the focus of your essay will be on a specific memorial but at the same time, you will be asking: what is the point, in general, of erecting statues in public spaces? How do they shape collective memory and identity?
