Most prevalent health problems, whether acute or chronic, are somehow associated with lifestyle or health behaviors. Change in health behavior is often an effective strategy employed in the management of a particular disease. The degree to which behavior change must occur is dictated by the nature of the condition and the treatment protocol. Depending on these parameters, behavior change can be temporary or permanent. For example, a patient diagnosed with acute appendicitis may require surgery, a short hospital stay, and a course of medication before he or she can return to his or her normal life activities. Alternatively, a patient diagnosed with diabetes might need to permanently change his or her diet and engage in lifelong blood sugar monitoring and insulin injections. What, then, is the best model for medical social workers? There are multiple theoretical models that support behavior change, including motivational interviewing. Medical social workers must consider the patient and his/her individual needs when determining the best model to use.
To prepare for this Assignment, review this week’s resources. Think about the illness or clinical conditions that might be associated with lifestyle or health behaviors.
In a 3- to 5-page paper:
• Identify the clinical condition in the assigned case study and recommend behavior changes that the identified client should make. Describe the benefits of behavior change and the challenges patients might face.
• Explain how motivational interviewing might promote, support, and maintain behavior change for the condition.
• Review the current literature and choose at least three articles relating to the long-term efficacy of behavior change for the clinical conditions in the assigned case study. Summarize the findings. Provide a balanced criticism and suggest strategies that fall within the scope of medical social work practice.
