Development, context, and Bronfenbrenner’s Theory
Preparation:
1. choose an issue to focus on. For example, you might select military family life, the impact of media and technology on child development, or a different topic of interest.
2. Choose a group that relates to your own professional pathway as your audience. For example, the group could consist of parents, teachers, counselors, or another population.
Directions:
Prepare a power point present of at least 12 slides for a group of people who work with children or adolescents about a pressing issue impacting children or adolescents today. Your presentation will focus on how your selected topic is relevant to multiple developmental contexts and on how the issue impacts and is impacted by each of the five systems of development identified by Bronfenbrenner. You will conclude your presentation by proposing one possible legislative or policy-related solution to the problem or issue.
-Complete the following in your presentation:
. Describe in detail the topic or issue that is your focus. Includes in your description why this issue is relevant to the group you are presenting to. Cite sources that support your description.
.Analyze how the issue is relevant to each of the following contexts in a developing child’s or adolescent’s life:
.The social context (relationships, peers, community, religious and other organizations.)
.The emotional context (self-esteem, confidence, attachment).
.The academic context (school environment, learning experiences, enrichment opportunities).
.The familial context (parents or guardians, siblings, extended family connections).
. Further analyze the issue, addressing how it impacts and is impacted by each of the systems identified in Bronfenbrenner’s theory (below). Draw connections between the contexts above and the systems they are part of. For example, there are social contexts in multiple levels:
.Microsystem.
.Mesosystem.
.Exosystem.
.Macrosystem and Chronosystem. ( You can combine your discussion of the fourth and fifth systems.)
. Propose one possible legislative or policy-related solution to the problem or issue. Support your proposed solution with sources.
*Additional Requirements

. Sources: Minimum of three sources required.
. Length: Minimum of 12 slides, up to as many as are needed to convey the information.
. Font: Times New Roman, 12-point
***These are more information that was given***
*Create a power point presentation of 12 or more slides in which you analyze how a contemporary issue impacting children or adolescents is relevant to multiple contexts of development and to the systems identified by Bronfenbrenner; then propose a potential legislative or policy-related action to address the issue.
*It is important to be able to explain how contemporary issues impact child and adolescents development, and to be ready to articulate this information to the wide variety of individuals who work with and care for children and adolescents. This assessment provides an opportunity to practice applying a central child development theory-Bronfenbrenner’s theory-to a contemporary issue and to practice presenting that information in a way that is clear to a broad audience.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.
.How can Bronfenbrenner’s systems theory framework be applied in each of the following settings and relationships? What are some real-world examples of the theory in each? :
.Society.
.Family.
.School.
.Peer relationships.
.What are the effects of military deployment and war on child and adolescent development in social, emotional, academic, and familial contexts? What are some of the factors of parental deployment(for example, separation from parents) that could affect children or adolescents?
.How might growing up in a military family affect family system dynamic and other social systems?
.How does media differentially influence children at various ages and stages of development?
.What are the positive results of media exposure? What are the negative results?
.How do sociopolitical issues affect children and adolescents? For example, how does the current state of the economy impact child and adolescent developmental outcomes?
