Introduction / Context According to Tidd & Bessant, organisational culture is a pattern
of shared values, beliefs and norms which shape behaviour
(2016; 79)
Management theorist Edgard Schein identified three levels at
which the culture of an organisation manifests;
Artefacts: – ‘all the phenomena you would see, hear and feel
when you encounter a new group with an unfamiliar culture’
(Schein, 2010; 23)
Espoused Values: – strategies, goals, justifications, (e.g.
mission& vision statements)
Basic Underlying Assumptions: – Unconscious, taken for
granted beliefs, perceptions, thoughts and feelings
Rationale As Schein says, ‘the forces that are created in social and
organizational situations deriving from culture are powerful. If
we don’t understand the operation of these forces, we become
victim to them’ (2010; 7)
Task Choose an organisation. Chose an industry you have not use
for your first assignment, last term.
As far as your position outside of an organisation allows you to,
you are to undertake a wide-ranging analysis of the culture of
an organisation, including a review of the inputs and outputs of
their innovation processes (Tidd & Bessant, 2016;631) and
present these as a group to your tutor in your Week 4
seminars.
Your task is to make an extensive analysis of the organisational culture of your
chosen organisations using Tid & Bessant (2015) and Schein (2010) theories and
