Healthcare consumerism

Consumer rights have become a major issue in healthcare policy due to dissatisfaction with managed care. The Patient Self-Determination Act of 1990 requires that healthcare organizations that receive Medicare and Medicaid funds give patients information about their rights, which makes complete sense. Yet consumer rights issues are very controversial. If too many consumer rights are recognized, how will this affect the ability of healthcare delivery systems and those that pay for healthcare (government, private insurers, etc.) to meet their goals to reduce healthcare costs?

After completing the readings for this module, perform your own research on healthcare consumerism. Address the following:

How is healthcare consumerism impacting healthcare?
How has healthcare consumerism affected patient choice for care?
Do you feel this is a reason integrative health practices are increasing?
Explain. Is healthcare consumerism improving health equity and reducing disparity or causing a greater chasm? Explain.
