1/ try to package the thesis in just 1, not 2 sentences, while keeping the thesis’s spotlight
more on Othello and less on insecurity’s effect on people in general…and
2/ if you want to contrast his martial security vs marital insecurity (ha ha ha), care to try a
“complex” sentence structure? Ex: Although__________________ , ____________________.
A totally generic example (but without stealing all your thunder!) :
Although Othello is strong and courageous in_____________________, insecurity
about ________ drives him to become an uncontrollable monster.
BONUS TIP: if you think the phrase “black ram” is really important to this, too, then you
can just add a blurb to the thesis also. Again: here’s a really clunky version; you can do it better:
Although Othello is strong and courageous in_____________________, insecurity
about ________ drives him to become an uncontrollable monster, all of which manifests in the
play’s metaphor of the black ram.
* I put in the “insecurity about ____________” part in there to get us thinking aloud
about something: if we have different kinds of insecurity as individuals, then what sort of
insecurity do you see most in Othello? (or maybe you see he has not just 1 but 2 kinds?) Ex: a
racial insecurity? a cultural insecurity? wealth insecurity? or a relationship/marriage insecurity?
or…? Whatever you find is key, you can name it in your thesis and explore that in your bod
