African American Music

The paper will focus on African-American music OR Native American music. Choose two musical selections from one of these categories. However, you CANNOT use the blues genre, Haudenosaunee Music, Powwow Music, Yuchi Music or Navajo dance songs. The first musical selection should be from a traditional genre of music (an older style, which features no electronic instruments), and the second selection should be from a contemporary genre (usually including electronic instruments and reflecting the influence of popular styles).
The essay should be a minimum of two full pages in length, written in Microsoft Word or a compatible word processing application (double spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, and 1” margins).
Organize your essay as follows (write at least one paragraph for each of these sections):
Introduction (mention the genres and musical examples that will be discussed in the essay).
Overview of Relevant Historical or Cultural Contexts for the nation associated the Musical Genre 1
Summary of the History and Musical Characteristics for Musical Genre 1
Discussion of a representative musical example for Musical Genre 1 (discuss at least four musical elements or musical characteristics heard in your selected genre).
Overview of the History and Culture for Musical Genre 2
Summary of the History and Musical Characteristics for Musical Genre 2
Discussion of a representative musical example for Musical Genre 2 (discuss at least four musical elements or musical characteristics heard in your selected genre).
Conclusion
-Each paragraph should contain a minimum of four sentences.

-Include a reference page at the end of the essay and in-text citations as needed.

-For the history of genre paragraphs, make sure to cover the specific era which encompasses your corresponding musical selection. For example, if you select a musical example of R&B since 2000, make sure that your history of R&B includes comments on that particular time frame.
