This response paper should include:
• Summary: Summary (1-2 sentences) of the reading.
• Identify the thesis: What is the author’s thesis/argument. Underline the thesis in
your write up. This can be a direct quote.
• Analyze: After summarizing your reading and identifying the author’s thesis, evaluate
and analyze the reading in 2 paragraphs.
First paragraph: What is your analysis of the thesis and key concepts and issues
presented by the author? What are the strengths and/or weaknesses of the
reading in relation to the thesis?
o Second paragraph: How does the author’s work expand on one key concept from
class (e.g. race, class, gender, neoliberalism, and/or popular culture)?
o Avoid quoting from the article in your analysis. If it is vital then use it but no
longer than one sentence. Do not use long quotes from reading to fill up your
paper.
• Reflect: Lastly (1 paragraph) reflect on the reading. Was there something that you
found interesting, surprising, confusing? Or extended your knowledge about a new topic
or confirmed existing ideas?
