migration in us-mex border, life in it and communities, NAFTA
No limit on sources but not a definite number needed
How are migration and labor defined by race and gender on the U.S.-Mexico border? (You need to begin by providing a working definition for both race and gender – cite your sources) How does migration lead to the creation of peripheral communities populated by low-income workers? We refer to these communities as “colonias,” what is a colonia and what are some of the many obstacles faced by colonias on the U.S. side of the border? (Chahin, Henkel, Homedes and Ugalde). On the Mexican side of the border, there are explicitly gendered dynamics that exist in the colonias. Discuss the role that gender plays in both the violence and activism that exists in many of the colonias on the southern side of the border. (Define and discuss NAFTA here and then make connections to gendered and racial violence using the Gaspar de Alba article, the video(s) “Señorita Extraviada” or “Maquilapolis” and connect it to industrialization and globalization, two processes that see immigrants and women as disposable, or conclude differently if you see things differently).
This essay response must revolve around an analysis of race, class, and gender. These should be the central topics of discussion.
Gender does not only mean “woman,” you should also discuss masculinity and the impact of community formation on men.
Be sure to refer to the sources! I want to see that you are including the author’s names and clear examples from your readings. If you provide quotes, and you should, you must explain the quote.
