Inequality and Diversity (anthropology)
In this essay, you will use write about inequality, as well as how human diversity ties into this issue. You will explore evidence of how the concept of race has imposed inequality in society and also explore evidence of the origins of ancient wealth inequality to better understand human diversity and how social and/or cultural differences are influenced by inequality and discrimination factors.
Essay Format: Type your essay in Microsoft Word and submit it on blackboard to receive full credit. The essay should be well-written and in essay format (see Basic Essay Format for how to write an essay). Be sure you have an introduction and conclusion. It should be typed, in Times New Roman font, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, and 1–3 pages in length. Do not re-write or include the questions below in your essay. You should have at least 2 works cited references for the essay, other than the news articles given below. These should be primary sources, so Journal Articles or book chapters. So, you will also have a Works Cited section at the end. The references should also be cited in the text as well. For example, you usually put a reference at the end of a sentence (Gillreath-Brown 2019). This usually has an author’s name then year of publication. You can use whichever format you are most comfortable with, so whether MLA or Chicago, or something else; just as long as you are consistent. None of the questions are meant to have a simple yes or no; you should always provide examples to support your claims. Be sure to address all questions below in your essay to receive full credit.

What are some different types of inequality and how have these inequalities manifested themselves over time? (Hint: Use these first questions to start your essay introduction, then followed by introducing the other things you will talk about in the rest of the essay [i.e., #s 2–3])
As a species, humans are extremely diverse, and yet our biological diversity cannot be partitioned into discrete types, subspecies, or races. At the same time, race functions a social and political category, imposing inequality in some societies. How did so-called biological race and very real sociopolitical race play out in the “Linsanity” of the spring of 2012? What are the beliefs about biological diversity and race in your community today? (Hint: This question comes from Ch. 7 [Modern Human Diversity] in your textbook; be sure to cite this reference with page number if taking ideas from the text, even if you are paraphrasing)
How do we examine ancient wealth/economic inequality? What were some of the major changes/drivers in ancient inequality? How does studying the reasons for wealth inequality in the past and how inequality has changed over time help us to better understand our world today? (Hint: You need to read at least one of the news articles above; you can also read and cite the main journal article [https://doi.org/10.1038/nature24646])
How does studying human diversity and inequality help us understand social and/or cultural differences? Why is it important to understand our own biases and the biases within our own culture? (Hint: Use this question to help with your conclusion; remember to bring in information that you discussed earlier in your essay to write a proper conclusion)
