The Weakest Generation?” By Dana Milbank
Now, here are some questions you might answer in your response: Do you agree or disagree with the author? Why? What are some flaws in his or her arguments? What points or arguments do you think the writer hadn’t considered? What was surprising from the reading? What information or claims were unexpected? What parts of the text did you think were particularly interesting or moving? What about them drew you in? Overall, this essay requires both summary/recap skills and your own analysis and provides another opportunity for you to incorporate and cite source material. : )
To help, remember that the summary-response essay is an academic paper, and so while you’ll include your thoughts and ideas in the essay, you’ll write in the academic third person. This means that though “I” is able to be used if kept minimal, do not use second person (any form of you).
Reminders: You will be paraphrasing extensively throughout the summary section and due to the increased research foundation for this assignment, you will need to prioritize in-text citations for this assignment, especially after names, years and statistics and quotes.
Introduction and Conclusion Strategies: For this essay, bringing in a quote or a statistic from the article into the introduction, first paragraph, could work well to draw in readers. For the conclusion you might consider bringing in hypothetical questions to encourage further thought, an anecdote related to the topic, or an emphasis on why the topic is important to talk about. Banned Words: You, Good, Bad
As always, please keep me posted if you have any questions and I look forward to reading more of your writing.
