Independence and Slavery
Drawing on class readings (both primary and secondary sources) compose an essay that supports one of the following arguments below:
Long-standing divisions between the social and racial groups of colonial Spanish America – the Peninsulares, Creoles, and Castas (indigenous, free black, mestizo, and slaves) contributed to different pathways to independence in Latin America. Using the readings, compare and contrast two independence movements, being sure to outline the factors that lead to their culmination.
Using Esteban Montejo’s description of the slave community on a Cuban sugar plantation, describe the different ways in which slaveholders were able to assert control over the slave population even though they were a minority of the population.
Develop your own thesis and interpretation of slavery or independence.

Remember to build upon your argument in each paragraph. In other words, each paragraph should provide evidence for your thesis statement. Be sure write a conclusion that restates your argument.

Your essay should be typewritten and double-spaced with one-inch margins. Use size 12 font. Remember to put the title of your essay and name on the first page. A separate title page is not necessary. The essay should be four full pages.
