Chinese Traditions Blog Post
Write a 1000-1500 word professional blog post or newspaper editorial about a
particular aspect of your chosen religious tradition. It should be formal, argumentative, and wellwritten for a generalist audience with no familiarity on the topic.
1. It will be helpful to have a somewhat narrow topic; think “contemporary funerals in
Japanese Buddhism” rather than “Buddhism” as a whole. Spend some time exploring and
see what information is out there and catches your interest.
2. Have a clear and argumentative thesis statement.
a. The whole piece should be persuasive, in addition to being informative.
3. Utilize at least four academic (peer-reviewed) sources. You may NOT count your
textbook as one of the sources.
4. Use Chicago Author-Date citations Make sure to insert hyperlinks for digital citations intext.
5. Write for a general audience (as opposed to academics and other students). Read a few
news articles from the New York Times (like this) or other major newspaper and
professional blog posts (like this) if you need some examples.
6. You will need more background information than a typical academic paper. If you
Googled your topic, what do you think would be helpful to know for a newbie? Write
your article like what you would want to find.
Nuts and Bolts: Use proper grammar, punctuation, interesting but clear prose, etc. You are
welcome to use “I” but make sure to use it sparingly!
1. Submit the paper in Word, PDF, or RTF (rich text file) format. If you don’t have Word, I
suggest sending the paper to yourself and re-saving it on a school computer.
2. 12-point font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, double spaced, paginated (page
numbers).
