responsibility to shape and control the discussion, to make sure that what you include from
your sources is interesting and relevant to your thesis, and to comment on its validity or
significance.

For example, a research essay topic can be:
• The Role of Women in Modern Islamic Traditions or Cultures.

Religious Disciplines.
• The Role of the Gothic Cathedral in the Middle Ages Played a Pivotal Part in
Redefining the Catholic Church.
A research paper is not:
• My Experiences with Religion.
• Christianity is Bad.
The length of your essay is 1250 words, word processed, and double-spaced (handwritten
essay not accepted). In terms of format, it will have a title page showing the title of the
essay, the name and number of the course, the professor’s name, the date, and your name.
Your bibliography will include a minimum of 10 sources, and your references should be
cited in correct bibliographic form. The bibliography, Works Cited or References, page
should be the last page of the essay and does not count as part of the length of the essay.
