Age norm survey/discussion post
PART 1
Assignment: A Learning Opportunity
In HUMN 6100, you explored the use of surveys as valuable tools with which to gather information. For this Assignment, you will apply survey construction techniques to the development of a survey about age norms and life course expectations. You will use this survey for your Discussion this week.
To Prepare:
Consider age norms or life course expectations about which you would like to survey individuals. Then, consider how you would operationalize these terms and create survey questions for them. Think about item formats (e.g., open-ended, Likert, etc.) that might best suit your purposes.
The Assignment:
Create a brief survey of eight questions about age norms and life course expectations.
PART 2
Discussion 1: Surveys of Age Norms
“Act your age!” Usually, this statement is made as a scolding comment designed to modify someone else’s behavior. For example, consider the expected reactions if a 15-year-old teen throws a pouty temper tantrum, a 40-year-old woman makes a crude joke, or an 80-year-old man signs up for an online dating service. In other words, this statement really says, “Change your behavior and conform to the age norms for your age!” Age norms are a variety of social norms that function as rules for behavior. Those social norms change as individuals age through different phases of life. For example, most people would expect that a child may color on the walls with a crayon, but almost no one would expect that behavior from a grown adult. Age norms are important in the study of aging, because they help researchers understand life course expectations of aging individuals within a society.
For this week’s Assignment, you created an eight-question survey regarding age norms and life course expectations. You will use that survey in this Discussion.
To Prepare:
Complete this week’s Assignment, in which you create an eight-question survey of age norms and life course expectations.
Post a discussion board your survey of age norms and life course expectations from this week’s Assignment. Support your choices of survey questions with evidence from the research literature
