Respond to a Criticism of Marketing

Instructions:

This assignment aligns with MO 1.1 (explain why marketing decisions are important) and MO 1.3 (analyze marketing’s role in formulating and implementing strategies). Chapters 1 and 2 of the attached PDF.

Marketing is defined as a value creation and exchange process in our textbook and articles in the optional readings. It is a common view many marketing scholars hold. However, one criticism of capitalist system is that resources are wasted on exorbitant sums spent to advertise and sell products. Higher costs are generated due to marketing. Eventually, these costs are transferred to consumers. Thus:
Marketing wastes money and manipulates people so that they buy things they really don’t need.

If firms were to just cut the marketing expenses, it would have benefited society more. How do you respond to such criticism of marketing? Please write an essay to defend marketing.
