An Overview of Session III
This session will examine colonialism, imperialism and the process of decolonization.
Colonialism: Motives
The motives and rewards for colonialism are Gold, God and Glory. (Glassner &Fahrer, p.212-214)
There are three different types of imperialism: Military, Economic and Cultural.
Military imperialism involves a radical change by the extension of a state sovereignty over territory through the use of military power while economic imperialism is more subtle and generally less effective process. Economic imperialism involves techniques designed to tie one country to another through economic means that one becomes in practice an economic colony of the other without giving up its formal sovereignty and its trapping. Cultural imperialism on the other hand aims not at controlling territory or economies but minds. (Glassner & Fahrer, p214)
Colonial Policies includes: Indirect Rule by the British, Direct Rule by the French.
Decolonization Process:
The factors that contributed to the dismantling of colonial empires include: the 2nd world war, western education, Christianity, urbanization, Indian independence, rise of nationalist movements, principles of self-determination, the United Nations, among others.
Post-colonialism and Independence:
Aftermath of colonialism: State building and Nation building, Economic Relations, Political Stability and Neo Imperialism.
Power:
Power is the factor that enables one actor to manipulate another actor against its preference.
Indicators or determinants of power includes: Territory; Natural Resources; Population; Government; Economy; Circulation; Military Strength and Foreign Relations.
