Academic Essay: Contributing an Original Argument

Now that you’ve developed the scholarship surrounding your topic/issue, you can provide strong support for how to best address it. For this essay, you will argue a clear, persuasive position on what should be done to improve or remedy the contemporary health-related crisis/problem (Rising Cancer Cases) you’ve researched, with the goal of making an original contribution to the field. Since you’ve already conducted in-depth research, you should draw from your expertise to demonstrate your credibility and awareness of other perspectives, accurately citing your research to support your claims, strategically considering counterarguments.
For this essay, you should have a clear audience in mind, guided by the journal or conference you’ve identified as your outlet earlier in the assignment cycle. Professionals or scholars who are reading your essay may already have an informed opinion on the topic and may be accustomed to thinking about it from a specialized perspective that may differ from yours. With this in mind, you should anticipate needing to change minds while emphasizing a sense of urgency about why a novel approach is necessary. You should adjust the academic essay according to the audience you anticipate for your journal or conference.

Should draw from a range of rhetorical strategies to argue (what should be done) to address the problem. It’s too much to ask you to solve the problem. Instead, argue a novel approach or suggestion for reframing the issue.

1. Should have a clear argumentative thesis, and the thesis should have tension (it should indicate a sense of opposition to prevailing ideas, concepts, or approaches)

2. Should establish a sense of urgency early in the essay. Why is this issue so important?

3. Should draw from a range of rhetorical strategies (ethos/pathos/logos) to persuade the reader: your essay should make ethical, emotional, and logical appeals. It should also consider counterarguments.
